Frequently Asked Questions
15x100/15x110 Fork Conversion Kits - General Questions
- Why does your included thru axle not match the length of my original?
- Most 15x100 and 15x110 conversion kits add approximately 3 mm overall to the width of the fork. In addition to that, many kits are supplied with a 2 mm thick spacer to fine tune the thru axle length. For example, if your original thru axle length is 125 mm, your kit might come with a 130 mm thru axle where the extra 5 mm are from 3 mm for the kit plus 2 mm for the spacer.
- What is the brown stuff on my thread adapter?
- It's a pre-applied thread locker intended to prevent unwanted unscrewing of the thread adapter.
- What if I want to continue using my original 15x100 or 15x110 wheel in my now-12x100/12x110 fork?
- For kits utilizing a thread adapter, it is highly recommended to use a hub adapter to avoid potential failure of the thread adapter from removing and reinstalling it. It is at its strongest and happiest place firmly engaged with your fork's threads.
- Can I uninstall my kit?
- Yes. For externally installed thread adapters, a 2.3 mm pin spanner like the Park Tool SPA-2 can be used to remove the thread adapter. Alternatively, a 1/2" (12 mm) screw extractor can also be used. Flangeless thread adapters can be unscrewed in the same fashion as they were installed.
15x100/15x110 Fork Conversion Kits - Installation Issues, External Thread Adapters
- How much torque should I apply when installing the thread adapter?
- The pre-applied threadlocker will offer some amount of resistance when screwing in the adapter. This is normal. Once the flange of the thread adapter has contacted the outside of the fork, no additional torque should be applied.
- My thread adapter won't stay tight or backs out when I try to remove the thru axle after installation. How can I make it stay put?
- First, do NOT try to grab the flange with pliers as it is easily damaged this way. Do NOT try to torque the thread adapter more as the flange can crack.
- If the pre-applied thread locker is not doing its job, additional low-strength thread locker (purple or blue) can be added to the thread adapter. Be sure the fork's threads are free of grease before applying and let it cure overnight after screwing it in fully.
- The flange on my thread adapter is damaged. How do I remove it?
- The simplest way is to use a 1/2" (12 mm) screw extractor if one is available.
- The alternative method is to use the 12 mm thru axle. Screw it in from the outside of the fork and keep tightening it. This will drive the remaining piece of the thread adapter toward the inside of the fork. Once free of the threads, you can grab the thread adapter with pliers and unscrew the thru axle from it. - I can't get the thread adapter to start screwing in. What are my options?
- Because the thread adapter is sized at the high limit for M15 threads, even a small amount of paint or debris can cause this issue.
- To clear the paint debris, the easiest option is to use your original thru axle. Screw it in and out several times from the outside of the fork.
- In the event that either the above does not work or if the original thru axle also will not screw in from the outside, a M15x1.5 mm tap (or M15x1 mm for Specialized forks) can be used to clean up the threads. Always lubricate the tap and start the tap from the inside, making certain it threads in smoothly for a full turn or two before applying any amount of torque.
